Work-Life Balance: The Secret to a Happier Workforce

Introduction 


In today's day and age, a healthy work-life balance is essential. Employees are often overwhelmed and find it hard to balance work with their personal lives. In its most simple form, a healthy work-life balance is more than just shooting for less hours in the work week. It's about creating a way for workers to achieve balance in their lives, finding meaningful ways to make a living, and nurturing their personal selves. An astounding amount of work hours are pumped into an organization. Because of the sheer hours, companies that facilitate a work-life balance see better satisfaction levels from their employees, and better engagement and productivity in the long haul. (SHRM, 2020)

Work-life balance keep employees healthy. Keeping employees healthy keeps the company strong. Employees that balance work and life are more motivated and less stressed. Individuals that are offered flexible work, such as remote, hybrid, or flexible work schedules are able to attend to their personal and family issues while remaining productive at work.

In the opposite case, the absence of balance can lead to stress, exhaustion, and employees losing their jobs. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many businesses recognized the importance of assisting employees with initiatives such as mental health programs, wellness activities, and manageable workloads. Companies such as Deloitte and Google have flexible work arrangements and employees wellness programs to keep their employees satisfied and retain them for long (Deloitte, 2020).  

Encouraging work-life balance has an important piece to the Human Resource departments. Supporting employees through implementing policies, providing counseling services, and training supervisors to lead by example are ways to have a positive impact. Suggestions for employees to take breaks, not work, and to use leave time are all healthy practices. Balanced employees are more engaged and creative, and impact the success of the organization as well as the individual positively (Harvard Business Review, 2020).

Conclusion

What was once a ‘nice to be able to utilize’ perk, flexible work-life balance, is now a requirement of corporate structure in a post-pandemic world. Providing flexible work-life balance is not simply a corporate altruism. It is good for business. Companies that give employees a sense of wellbeing and corporate flexibility build a sense of trust and a positive atmosphere where employees thrive and drive success. It is up to HR and executives to champion policies that defend personal time and treat work and emotional wellbeing holistically. Bottom line, employees who maintain work-life balance, enhance positive outcomes for organizations and contribute to sustainable growth (SHRM, 2020; Deloitte, 2020; Harvard Business Review, 2020;SHRM 2020).

  5. Although the content does a good job of highlighting the advantages of work-life balance, it mostly makes the assumption that flexible rules are the only way to address the problem. Heavy workloads, ambiguous expectations, or workplace cultures that encourage overworking in spite of formal policies are the main reasons why many employees still struggle in reality. Discussing the difficulties faced by sectors like manufacturing and healthcare that have little room for flexibility could further strengthen the case. A more realistic and balanced viewpoint on attaining significant work-life balance would result from addressing these pragmatic obstacles.
