Remote Work and the Future of Organizations
Remote Work and the Future of Organizations
Introduction
Remote work is where employees fulfill their work duties from home or anywhere else in contrast to going to an office in person. This work arrangement method gained popularity due to the covid-19 pandemic as people needed to start working from home in order to earn an income and still maintain social distance. As a solution to this, Sri Lanka along with many other countries, encouraged a work from home arrangement.
Remote employees need several things to work productively and efficiently, remote employees need to have a stable internet connection along with online work spaces such as Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom. Dovetailing on the lockdown, remote work has pioneered a structural change to the employment system which is supported by technology and digital organizational flexibility (Ozimek, 2023).

Remote work has both advantages and disadvantages like any system.
Advantages include:
- Employees have the ability to better balance their duties with their personal lives.
- Employee travel expenses reduce organizational spending.
- Employees are able to better allocate their time and focus on the task at hand.
- An organization can more easiliy recruit and hire highly skilled workers from other countries.
Disadvantages include:
- Less communication may lead to misunderstandings among employees.
- Over time, there may be less collabroation and teamwork.
- Evaluating productivity and controlling employees can be difficult.
Hybrid Model
Post-COVID, some companies began trying out what was called the hybrid strategy. Employees would report to the office twice a week and work from home the other two days. This system helps to have flexibility in the work schedule while focusing on employee collaboration. (Deloitte, 2023)
Conclusion
From the employers’ perspective still managing the office tasks and remote work balance, the flexibility presents, managing office tasks and remote work balance presents opportunities, but the effectiveness truly is dependent on many factors-the employer, the duties and responsibilities of the role, and type of organization. From a human resource management point of view, the primary goal of the organization should be to manage employees in a way that is motivational, encouraging, has focus on teamwork and collaboration. It is highly likely that remote work by itself would be ineffective for HRM, while a hybrid/fully on-site work system is generally a better fit for most companies. Organizations are likely to rely on software for seamless remote work in combination with new approaches to remote work in order to provide a workplace that meets the dual goals of offering flexibility and productivity. Remote and hybrid work arrangements are encouraging organizations to be more adaptable and innovative. (Ozimek, 2023) (Deloitte, 2023) (Rana, 2023)

ReplyDeleteAs someone working in hospitality, I found this article very relevant. Hotels traditionally rely on in‑person teamwork and guest interaction, but the pandemic showed us that certain roles—like reservations, marketing, and finance—can be managed remotely without losing efficiency. At the same time, guest‑facing staff must be physically present, which makes the hybrid model especially practical in our industry. Remote work helps us attract skilled professionals from different regions, while on‑site collaboration ensures service quality and guest satisfaction. The balance between flexibility and teamwork is crucial, and I believe the future of hospitality organizations will depend on how well we integrate technology with human connection.
